Your chain is the cheapest part of your drivetrain and the most expensive to ignore. A $30 chain ridden 200 miles too long will chew a $90 cassette and a $60 chainring, and it does it quietly. Here’s how to catch it early with tools you already have.

Why Chain Wear Actually Matters

A new chain has a half-inch pitch, pin to pin. As you ride, friction between pins and rollers makes that pitch longer. We call it “stretch” but nothing stretches — the material wears away inside. On a mountain bike, dust and grit accelerate that wear 2–3x compared to a road bike.

Once the pitch grows just 0.5%, the chain no longer seats deep in the cassette teeth. Under load it climbs the teeth, rounds them off, and you start getting skips under power. Replace the chain at 0.5% and your cassette lasts 3–4 chains. Wait to 0.75% or 1.0% and you’ll be buying both every time. 3 Ways to Check Wear (Pick One)

1. Chain Checker Tool — Fastest

This is the shop method. Drop a Park Tool CC-2 Chain Checker between the rollers. If the 0.5% side drops in, you’re on clock. If the 0.75% side drops in, replace now. It takes 5 seconds, works with the wheel in, dirty chain and all. At $10–$12 it pays for itself the first time you save a cassette.

How to use it: shift to big ring/small cog tension to straighten the lower run, place checker without force. Don’t push. Gravity is enough. Check three spots on the chain — chains wear unevenly.

2. 12-Inch Ruler — No Special Tool

New chain: 12 full links = exactly 12 inches pin to pin. Hold a steel ruler against the chain with the 0 mark on a pin. The pin at the 12-inch mark should be dead-on. If it’s 1/16″ past 12″, you’re at ~0.5%. If it’s 1/8″ past, you’re at 1% and you’ve probably worn the cassette.

This method is less precise on 12-speed because rollers have more play, but it still catches a truly dead chain. Clean the chain first so you can see the pins.

3. Feel and Sound — Emergency Field Check

Spin the cranks backward. If the chain rattles on top of the cassette or lifts easily off the front chainring when you pull it forward at the 3 o’clock position, it’s worn. If shifting is suddenly vague even after you’ve checked cable tension and hanger alignment — like we do in our Mid-Summer Drivetrain Survival guide — suspect the chain.

This is a triage method, not a measurement. Use it on the road to decide whether to ride hard or nurse it home.

When to Actually Replace

For 10/11/12-speed MTB:

  • 0.5% wear (0.5 side drops): Order a new chain. Safe to keep riding this week, but don’t do a big trip.
  • 0.75% wear (0.75 side drops): Replace now. This is the Shimano and SRAM recommendation for 11/12-speed.
  • 1.0%+: Replace chain and budget for cassette and chainring inspection. If a new chain skips under load in middle cogs, the cassette is gone.

Mileage is useless as a rule — 300 dusty miles can wear more than 1,500 miles in clean conditions. Time-based? In summer dust, check every 4–6 rides. In winter, every 10–12. If you ride in grit, lube and wipe after every dusty ride; that alone doubles chain life.

What a Worn Chain Does to Cassette and Chainring

Chain pitch grows → rollers ride higher on tooth profile → teeth get shark-finned. On narrow-wide chainrings the wide teeth thin first, and you’ll see chain drops increase. On cassettes the smaller 10–16T cogs wear fastest because fewer teeth share the load.

A quick test after you install a new chain: pedal hard in your most-used gear. If it skips or chatters within the first mile, the old chain machined the cassette to match. You’ll need to replace it. Quick Replacement Workflow

1. Buy the right speed chain — 12-speed chains don’t work on 11-speed drivetrains consistently. 2. Size it: big cog/big ring + 2 links (hardtails) or follow your suspension maker’s growth chart. 3. Use a fresh quick-link — never reuse one more than once on trail and zero times if it’s a Shimano 12-speed link that was peened. 4. After install, check B-gap/rear derailleur clutch — a fresh chain often needs 1/4 turn less cable tension.

Keep your old chain labeled with date and mileage. It’s useful as a wear reference when you wonder “was my last chain this bad?”

How often should I check my MTB chain?

Every 4–6 rides in dusty summer conditions, every 10–12 rides in clean winter. If you ride in sand or after rain, check right after — grit accelerates pin wear.

Can I keep riding at 0.5% wear?

Yes, short term. 0.5% is your early warning for 11/12-speed. Order a new chain and replace within 2–3 rides. At 0.75%, replace before any hard ride.

Will a new chain fix skipping?
