Technical climbs are where a hard-earned ride can unravel, so having a repeatable plan keeps pace, power, and patience in sync. Treat each ascent as a series of manageable segments instead of one endless grind.

Phase 1: Pre-ride blueprint

Start climbing before you leave the trailhead by aligning terrain, weather, and energy so you show up with the right kit, a clear plan, and a sense of confidence.

  • Map the demands. Use the route profile to spot where the grade spikes, surfaces shift, or the line narrows, then label those spots as momentum-critical checks.
  • Choose the cassette and chainring combo that keeps you in a 65-75 rpm window on the steepest pitches. Staying in that window keeps traction steady instead of letting the wheel spin.
  • Plan traction before you pull from the small ring. Dial 3-5 psi below your usual all-mountain pressure if the climb is loose, and set a command grip hand position (thumb past the bar, fingertips ready) so the front stays planted.
  • Fuel and hydration cues. Take a solid snack within 30 minutes of the climb, stash a quick gel or bar within reach, and keep one water bottle with a visible pour line so you can sip without fumbling.
  • Communication and bailout checklist. Share the plan with your riding partner, know the nearest road access in case the line goes sideways, and stash the multi-tool, pump, and mouse-sized tube at the same hip so you can keep moving.
  • Brake inspection. Rub the pads, squeeze the lever, and clear any grit so you trust the stopping power before the grade dumps you into tight sections.

Phase 2: Approach & attack

The minutes leading up to the climb decide the tone, so stay calm, stable, and deliberate. Double-check that nothing shifted while you waited, because it is not the time to fiddle with cables.

  • Pulse-check the bike. Spend 10 seconds at the base scanning tire pressure, suspension rebound, and chain so nothing surprises you three turns in.
  • Choose the line before you hit the grade. Walk it if needed, then resolve whether you’ll stay tight, drift to the shoulders, or sidestep a slick shelf. Lock that choice in so your hands can focus on balance.
  • Brace your upper body. Keep elbows slightly bent, shoulders square, and eyes locked 3-8 meters ahead to absorb hits without punching the bars.
  • Start at two-thirds effort. Cue your lungs to ease into the effort so you can settle into rhythm instead of spiking the heart rate before traction is secure.

Phase 3: Execution & drills

Once you are climbing, turn the blueprint into sensory checkpoints. Treat every stride like a mini drill and rehearse the moves before the terrain punches back.

  • Cadence window drill. Maintain 65-75 rpm for the first 60 seconds, then slow to a soft pedal through the hardest section before resuming the window.
  • Line-refresh pauses. Every terrain shift deserves a quick unweight, scan, and commit so the bike stays true without stopping momentum.
  • Pressure balance switch. Move your weight rearward 1-2 inches when traction drops, bring it forward when the surface smooths, and think in inches rather than percentages.
  • Breathing, not bleaching. Inhale for three strokes, exhale for three, and when the climb eases, exaggerate the exhale while letting cadence sink to 55 rpm for two turns.
  • Line-memory drill. Pick a pivot point such as a boulder or tree, ride the same line twice, and note whether the front wheel is tracking the same path; this builds the habit of reading subtle cues ahead.
  • Drill: “Pace & Pump” intervals. Pick a bump, pedal smoothly through it, then pump slightly over the crest before resuming the climb; repeat three times so your upper body and legs sync.

Phase 4: Reset & link

The climb doesn’t end when the grade eases, because the next trail section depends on how you finished.

  • Drop effort while still moving. Shift into the middle ring, sip water, and breathe through the nose to restore oxygen as the pitch relaxes.
  • Inspect the drivetrain. Take the pause to wipe the chain if mud or grit gathered, preventing the next pedal stroke from sounding like gravel.
  • Log the climb. Note what worked and what stalled the rhythm, either in your phone or with a riding partner, so you can tweak the blueprint next time.
  • Gear-choice checkpoint. If the climb led to a ridge, keep the lower-pressure setting; if it opens to faster terrain, bump pressure 2-3 psi and stay in the same cassette.

Use this blueprint until the phases become muscle memory. The drills sharpen your legs, the checklist keeps the bike ready, and the strategy keeps you under control when the grade spikes.
