Pedal strikes kill flow. One second you’re railing a techy traverse, the next your crank slams a rock, your feet bounce off, and you’re dabbing or worse—over the bars. In summer, when trails are low, loose, and rutted, clearance gets even tighter.

The good news: most pedal strikes aren’t bad luck. They’re setup and timing. Fix those, and you keep the low center of gravity that makes your bike corner well, without constantly tagging rocks.

Here are 7 fixes that actually work, from quick trailside checks to one-time upgrades.

Why Pedal Strikes Happen More Than You Think

Three things put your pedal in the strike zone: low bottom bracket height, long cranks, and bad pedal timing. Modern trail bikes have low BBs for stability—that’s great for cornering, but it means you have 10-15mm less room than a 2018 bike. Add 175mm cranks, thick platform pedals, and a ratchet where you should have coasted, and you’re asking for it.

You can’t raise the trail, but you can raise effective clearance and keep your feet out of the danger window.

1. Reduce Your Pedal Profile

Not all flat pedals are equal for clearance. A bulky pedal with a tall axle body hangs 2-3mm lower than a slim-profile pedal with chamfered leading edges. That matters when a rock is kissing your sole.

If you ride flats, look for a thin, concave platform around 12-14mm thick with smooth edges that glance off obstacles instead of grabbing. And check your pins—worn-down pins let your foot slide forward, putting more shoe over the front edge.

Put your bike next to a curb. With cranks level, measure from the bottom of your pedal to the ground. Compare left/right. If you’re under 95mm with sag, you’re in strike-prone territory.

3. Time Your Pedal Strokes, Don’t Just Coast

The classic mistake: pedaling into a rock garden, then panic-coasting with pedals randomly down. Instead, set your timing 10 feet early.

  • Approach level: As you enter chunk, bring cranks to level (3 and 9 o’clock).
  • Ratchet, don’t spin: Use quarter-turns with your strong foot forward to inch forward without dropping a pedal low.
  • Eyes two rocks ahead: If you see a high-side rock on the right, go left-foot forward.

Drill this in a parking lot: lay two water bottles 6 feet apart, ride through with level cranks, only ratcheting when both pedals are clear. Ten clean passes and your brain starts doing it automatically.

4. Use Your Dropper to Buy Clearance

A low saddle kills your ability to unweight. When you drop your heels and hover just above the saddle, you can lift the bike 15-20mm with your legs—exactly what you need over that sneaky embedded rock.

If your dropper setup is too tall or too short, you sit heavy through chunk and every pedal bob becomes a strike risk. Set your fully-dropped height so you have a soft bend in the knees with heels level, not locked out.

5. Suspension Sag and Low-Speed Support

Running too soft up front dives your BB under braking, and too soft in the rear squats you into the strike zone when you pedal. In summer, oil thins and you might be softer than you think.

Check sag first: 15-18% rear for trail, 20% front is a good start. Then add 2-3 clicks of low-speed compression front and rear to keep you riding higher in your travel through rock gardens. You’re not locking it out—you’re keeping it from wallowing when you ratchet.

6. Line Choice: Ride the High Side

The lowest line isn’t the fastest—it’s where water and tires have carved a trough, and your pedals live in that trough. The high side 6-12 inches off the main line is usually firmer, less cupped, and gives you daylight under your feet.

Look for the “shelf” where the trail edge meets undisturbed dirt. One wheel on the shelf, one just off, and you’re coasting level through sections where others are striking. Exit wide early to set up for the next rock, rather than diving tight and then having to pedal mid-chunk.

7. Foot Placement and Shoe Grip

Your foot creeping forward on the pedal adds effective length and moves your toe into rock-catching territory. Set up your flats so the pedal axle sits just in front of the ball of your foot, not under arch or toes. The shoe should grip, not float.

Sticky rubber matters here. A worn-out running shoe slips forward on impact, then you jab down to recover—classic double-strike. A proper MTB shoe with a firm midsole and tacky outsole locks your foot so you can hold level cranks even when you clip a root.

30-Second Trailside Test

Before your next descent, do this:

  1. Level cranks, stand tall on dropper. Can you bounce the bike 20mm with your legs without your feet moving?
  2. Ratchet both directions—do your pins/sole let you ratchet without slip?
  3. Push hard on front brake and watch your fork—if it dives more than 25% quickly, add LSC.
