Most riders have one default: they either sit and spin until they stall, or they stand up the moment it gets hard and instantly spin out. Tech climbing is faster when you can use both – seated power for traction and standing attack for clearance and punch.

This is a general trail system that works anywhere loose meets steep. Use it on a 5-minute fire-road grind or a 20-foot ledgey punch and you’ll clean more climbs without burning matches you need for the descent.

The Two Modes: Seated Power vs Standing Attack

Seated Power: Traction First

Seated climbing keeps weight on the rear tire, slows your inputs, and lets the tire bite. Think 70-80% of your weight through the saddle, hands light, elbows soft, eyes 15-20 feet ahead. Cadence stays steady – not grinding, not frantic. On loose over hardpack, marbles, or damp roots, this is your grip mode.

Standing Attack: Clearance and Punch

  • Tight switchback exits – standing helps you open your hips and look through the turn.
  • When the saddle buzzes – if your saddle is hitting roots or rocks, you’re too low. Hover just above it.

The Transition: Switching Without Spinning Out

The stall happens during the switch. You unload the rear tire as you lift off the saddle and it breaks loose. Fix it with timing:

  1. Pre-load the gear. Shift one gear harder right before you stand. That adds chain tension and keeps the tire loaded.
  2. Hips forward, not up. Move hips 3-4 inches forward over the saddle nose, then extend legs. Think chest to stem, not straight up.
  3. Drive on the downstroke. Stand during the power phase of your strong leg. You keep pressure on the rear as you rise.
  4. Sit before you run out. As soon as you crest the ledge, sit and lighten hands again. The goal is 2-4 standing strokes max.

  • Bar roll: slight back-sweep high enough that wrists stay neutral standing – reduces arm pump that kills attack moves.
  • Tire pressure: if you spin both seated and standing, you’re usually over pressure. Test 1-2 PSI lower in the rear on your next loop.

Drill: The 3-Lap Seated/Standing Switch

Find a 60-90 second climb with 2 ledges and loose dirt. Ride it three times back to back, no stops.

Lap 1 – Seated only. Stay seated whole climb. Note where you slip or heart rate spikes.

Lap 2 – Standing attacks only. Stand for every ledge or steep pitch. Note where front wanders or rear spins.

Lap 3 – Blend. Seated power everywhere except your two standing spots. Use the pre-load shift and hips-forward move. Aim for zero dabs and quiet rear tire.

Most riders clean Lap 3 after two fails on 1 and 2. That’s the switch timing working.
